Commercial Power Supply Installations and Upgrades in the Midlands

If you run a business, you probably don’t think about your power supply until something goes wrong. The main breaker trips every time the compressor kicks in. The new oven can’t be connected. The EV chargers you promised your staff turn out to need more capacity than the building has.

We hear these stories every week. At AJF Electrical, we’ve spent over 40 years sorting out power supplies for offices, shops, warehouses, factories and schools across the Midlands. We’re a family-run firm, and we treat your premises the way we’d want our own treated: get the job done properly, keep you trading, and leave everything tidy and certified.

Reliable Commercial Power Supply Solutions From Trusted Commercial Electricians

When people say “power supply”, they often just mean the cable coming in from the street. In reality, it’s a chain. There’s the incoming supply and meter, the main switchgear, the sub-mains running to different parts of the building, and the distribution boards feeding each circuit. A weak link anywhere in that chain causes problems everywhere else.

So we look at the whole thing, not just the bit that’s failing. We’ll ask what you’re running now, what you’re planning to add over the next few years, and then find the most sensible way to get you there. Sometimes that’s a full upgrade. Sometimes it’s a smarter layout of what you’ve already got. Either way, everything we install meets BS 7671 and comes fully tested and certified.

Our Commercial Electrical Services for Power Supply

New Electricity Supply and Connections for Business Premises

New build, new unit, or splitting a building into separate tenancies? Getting a new electricity supply sorted involves your Distribution Network Operator (DNO), and the paperwork can be a headache. We’ll work out what capacity you actually need, put together the information the DNO asks for, chase them on your behalf, and install everything on your side of the meter. That way, when the DNO finishes their part, you’re ready to switch on.

Three Phase Power Supply Installation and Upgrades

Lots of businesses start on a single-phase supply and simply outgrow it. Add a bit of heavy machinery, a commercial kitchen, air conditioning, a couple of fast EV chargers or a solar array, and you’ll soon hit the limit. We install new three-phase supplies and convert existing single-phase ones, including the switchgear, cabling and boards needed to spread the load evenly across all three phases.

Power Distribution, Sub Mains and Distribution Boards

Good power distribution is the difference between a fault that knocks out one area and a fault that shuts the whole site. We run sub mains to outbuildings, mezzanines and new production lines, swap out tired or overloaded distribution boards, and reorganise circuits so problems can be isolated quickly. It also makes life much easier the next time you want to add something.

Temporary Builders Supply for Construction Sites

Building work needs safe power from the first day on site. We set up temporary builders' supplies and site distribution to the stricter rules that apply on construction sites, then take them down or turn them into part of the permanent installation once the build is finished.

Load Assessments and Supply Capacity Planning

Before you spend money on an upgrade, it’s worth knowing exactly where you stand. Our load assessment shows how much of your supply you’re using and how much is left. More often than you’d think, it turns out a rebalance or a distribution upgrade will do the trick, which saves you the cost and the wait of a full supply increase.

What Is a 3 Phase Power Supply?

A 3-phase power supply sends electricity down three live conductors instead of one. Each one carries alternating current, but they’re timed a third of a cycle apart, so as one phase dips, another is rising. The result is a smooth, steady flow of power rather than a series of pulses.

In the UK, a normal single-phase supply is 230 volts. Three-phase gives you 400 volts between phases. That extra, steadier power is why it’s used for big motors, compressors, lifts and industrial kit, and why most commercial and industrial buildings run on it. It’s also more efficient, as you can carry the same load with smaller cables.

Single Phase vs 3 Phase: Which Does Your Business Need?

If you’re a small office or shop running lights, laptops and a kettle, single phase is usually fine. Three-phase starts to make sense once you’ve got heavy or constant loads, such as workshop machinery, compressors or welders, commercial kitchens and big fridges, several EV chargers, or larger solar, battery, heat pump or air conditioning systems.

Still not sure? Tell us what you run and what you’re planning, and we’ll give you an honest answer. If you don’t need to upgrade, we’ll say so.

Signs Your Business Needs a Power Supply Upgrade

An undersized supply rarely gives up in one go. It tends to drop hints first. Breakers trip when a few machines start at once. Lights flicker or dim when equipment fires up. A distribution board feels warm, smells of burning or has scorch marks around it. The installation is so old that spare parts are getting hard to find. Or you’ve simply got plans, like an extension, new equipment, EV charging or solar, that your current setup wasn’t designed for.

If any of that sounds familiar, it’s worth getting someone in to look. A commercial EICR is often the best place to start, because it tells us the condition of what you’ve already got before we plan anything new.

How Our Commercial Power Supply Process Works

We keep things simple. We’ll come out to your site, have a proper look around and talk through your plans. Then we’ll work out your load and design something that suits both your budget and where your business is heading. If the DNO needs to be involved, we’ll deal with them so you don’t have to.

When it comes to the install, we plan around you. Evenings, weekends and quieter periods are all on the table, so the power is off for as little time as possible. Once we’re done, we test everything and hand over the full certification for your records and your insurer.

Why Choose AJF Electrical as Your Commercial Electrical Contractors

Put simply, you get the care of a family business with the know-how of a contractor that’s been doing this for over 40 years. We’re NICEIC Approved Contractors and hold CHAS and Constructionline accreditation, so you know the work is held to a high standard. We design and install everything ourselves, from the first survey to the final certificate, and we’ll always keep you in the loop.

It also helps that we do a lot more than power supplies. We install EV chargers, solar PV, battery storage and forklift charging too, so we can plan your supply around everything you want to connect, not just what’s there today.
